2021 PaddleSport Training System’s Inaugural Virtual Indoor Canoe Championships
First of all, we would like to congratulate and thank all those folks that participated in this first ever planet-wide virtual indoor canoe paddling competition. We plan to hold this event again next winter in February and expect participation to grow as word spreads about this fun and free event.
The inaugural 2021 VICC entries were light in number. This being our first attempt at a virtual event on the canoe adapter, we made some mistakes:
1. We initially required dragon boat teams to consist of 20 members since that was a typical dragon boat class. The 20-member team requirement was a big mistake!
We found that most of the more established indoor dragon boat regattas have pared down team events to teams consisting of only 4 members, a number much easier for entrants to organize.
2 We sent out an announcement to make the change team size requirement for the Dragon boat team event, but it was too late to have a positive effect. For this mistake we apologize to all those that were discouraged from entering the dragon boat event.
3. We also held the race during the month of March and by that time of year most of the marathon paddlers, a paddling discipline concentrated in North America have open water to train on and have abandoned their indoor training for the remainder of the season. Next year we will hold the VICC in the month of February to accommodate the marathon paddlers that are, for the most part, located in North America.
4. We also did not place enough importance on the pandemic and its effect on making club-owned paddling adapters unavailable to club members compared to normal times.
